A heartwarming story of an environmental public officer who saved a citizen collapsed on a crosswalk during early morning street cleaning by performing CPR has come to light.

Jae-hyun Oh, an environmental public officer belonging to the Cleaning Administration Division of Seodaemun-gu Office in Seoul, discovered a man in his 50s unconscious and collapsed on a crosswalk in the early morning of the 13th last month and saved his life by performing CPR.

Officer Oh, responsible for cleaning the roadside area around Chungjeongno Station on Line 5, found the pedestrian unconscious and collapsed near Ahyeon Seonggyeol Church crosswalk while cleaning the area at around 5:36 a.m. that day. Although it was early morning, vehicles were passing by, making it a dangerous situation.

He first reported the incident to 112 and, after checking the condition of the collapsed man, noticed no response to questions and no heartbeat, and immediately began performing CPR. While performing CPR for about four minutes, the 119 emergency medical team and police arrived, provided emergency care, and transported the man to a nearby hospital. According to police and fire officials, the man’s heartbeat returned after cardiac arrest, and he is currently receiving inpatient treatment.

Officer Oh said, “I learned CPR during the industrial safety and health training conducted by the district office, which was very helpful in the actual situation,” and added, “I am truly relieved to have been able to help someone in an emergency.”

Seong-heon Lee, mayor of Seodaemun-gu Office, expressed gratitude, saying, “By taking the lead, he saved a precious life and reminded us that there is love and hope in our society,” and added, “We will continue to strive to provide CPR education to residents so that anyone can respond quickly.”
