Gangnam-gu's 144 Street Vendors Shed Old Grime Welcoming the New Spring

Street vending stands and shoe repair stalls in Gangnam-gu have become noticeably cleaner.

Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) conducted a spring cleaning campaign from the 18th to the 22nd of last month, targeting 144 locations including street vending stands, shoe repair stalls, and licensed street vendors.

In Gangnam-gu, there are 112 sidewalk business facilities such as street vending stands and shoe repair stalls, and 32 licensed street vendors including standardized stalls and food trucks. Among these, 136 locations participated in self-maintenance of their facilities under the principle of "I clean my own store."

They washed the exterior walls of the stands and stalls, which had been contaminated with accumulated grime, dust, and de-icing agents during the winter. Unauthorized extensions such as awnings and windbreaks installed during winter, as well as illegal storage items, were also cleaned up. Food stalls removed oil stains and other contaminants from the surrounding sidewalk blocks.

The district provided watering equipment and manpower to support maintenance at eight business facilities where self-cleaning was difficult due to reasons such as old age or disability. Additionally, at 61 locations with anti-street vendor facilities such as stone flower pots and circular benches near Gangnam Station and Samseong Station, discarded cigarette butts and other litter were thoroughly cleaned, and spring plants are planned to be planted.

Jo Seong-myeong, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, stated, “By maintaining the business facilities on sidewalks, we have provided a safe and pleasant walking environment for pedestrians welcoming spring. We will continue environmental maintenance efforts to improve the city’s appearance.”
