Secured 3.6 Billion KRW of National Funding Out of 5.7 Billion KRW for Infrastructure Development Project
Nonsan City in Chungnam announced on the 1st that Gwangseok-myeon Livestock Complex was selected for the ‘2024 Smart Livestock Complex Development Project’ competition, securing 3.6 billion KRW in national funding.
In 1993, as part of a government export policy revitalization, a large-scale livestock complex covering 7.5 hectares was established in Gwangseok-myeon, Nonsan City. Currently, 13 farms raise about 25,000 pigs there.
However, during humid or hot summers, severe odors have been generated for over 30 years due to aging facilities, causing distress to residents.
Since taking office in July 2022, Mayor Baek Seong-hyun listened to residents’ inconveniences, united farm owners to lay the groundwork for modernization projects, and visited central government departments to secure national funding.
On November 12, 2022, a policy officer from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs visited the Gwangseok-myeon Livestock Complex, and on the 13th, the guidelines were revised to relax the scale of the smart livestock complex development from 15 hectares to over 3 hectares and to allow both new and existing complexes to be eligible.
As a result, the city was solely selected in the ‘2024 Smart Livestock Complex Development Project’ competition, securing 3.6 billion KRW in national funding out of the 5.7 billion KRW base construction budget.
The city plans to build fully enclosed smart livestock barns and, through linked public projects, create a ‘carbon-neutral clean livestock complex’ with a total project cost of 68.7 billion KRW.
Through this project, the city aims to establish itself as a model for smart livestock barns, attracting representatives from other regions troubled by barn odors as an exemplary case of advanced livestock farming.
Mayor Baek Seong-hyun said, “We have never ignored the difficulties faced by citizens and have solved challenging issues together with them. I hope this becomes an opportunity for citizens to take pride.”
