The ‘Daegu Livestock Wholesale Market,’ the only one owned by an administrative agency nationwide, will be closed on April 1.
The Daegu City Slaughterhouse, initially established on January 1, 1970, in Seongdang-dong, Dalseo-gu, Daegu to facilitate smooth distribution of livestock products and maintain reasonable prices to help stabilize citizens' lives, was later relocated from Jungri-dong, Seo-gu to its current location in Geomdan-dong, Buk-gu in May 2001.
However, it has now lost its original purpose and function, and after more than 20 years, the increasing budget for maintenance of aging facilities has become a significant financial burden on the city, along with various concerns regarding hygiene and safety.
A research report by the Korea Labor Institute concluded that “closure is reasonable from locational, distributional, financial, and functional perspectives,” and with the incorporation of Gunwi County and the operation of Gunwi Folk LPC (processing capacity: cattle 100 heads/day, pigs 1,500 heads/day), the necessity for Daegu City to directly operate a slaughterhouse has further decreased.
An Jung-gon, Director of the Daegu City Economic Bureau, stated, “The site after closure is planned to be used as a depot for the Urban Railway Line 4, and facilities that will enhance the convenience of Daegu citizens will be established in the future.”
