Samsung Electronics' 'Bespoke AI Combo' Has Lower Power Consumption Than Competing Products

US Energy Star Certification
Annual Power Consumption 319kWh
Lower Than LG Electronics and General Electric
Ongoing Rivalry with LG Electronics

Samsung Electronics' all-in-one washer-dryer 'Bespoke AI Combo' has received certification in the United States for saving more electricity compared to competing products.

According to the U.S. Energy Star on the 31st, the annual power consumption of the U.S. model WD53DBA900H of the Bespoke AI Combo was confirmed to be 319 kilowatt-hours (kWh). The annual power consumption of LG Electronics' Tromm Objet Collection Wash Combo U.S. model WM6998H was 380 kWh, and the annual power consumption of the U.S. General Electric (GE) 2-in-1 washer-dryer combo PFQ97HSPVDS was 399 kWh.

The CEF (Combined Energy Factor) item, which indicates the efficiency of the dryer, was highest for Samsung Electronics' product at 7.50. LG Electronics followed with 6.30, and GE was marked at 6.00. CEF is an indicator of efficiency per unit of energy, with higher values indicating higher energy efficiency.

Regarding this survey result, Samsung Electronics stated, "LG Electronics has marketed that its product consumes less energy, but the U.S. Energy Star certification revealed the opposite result," and added, "The domestic model, which has a larger drying capacity than the U.S. released product, is expected to consume even more power." The wash combo product LG Electronics released in the U.S. earlier this year has a drying capacity of 13 kg, which is less than the 15 kg capacity of the product released domestically.

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics recently launched integrated washer-dryers in the domestic market and have shown a rivalry over power consumption and other factors. In the press release for the launch of the 'LG Tromm Objet Collection Wash Combo,' LG Electronics emphasized, "Unlike other washer-dryers sold domestically whose drying power consumption exceeds 1000 watts (W), the drying power consumption of the Tromm Wash Combo is only 570W." This was interpreted as an indirect reference to Samsung Electronics' 'Bespoke AI Combo,' whose drying power consumption is 1700W.

In response, Samsung Electronics argued, "Drying power consumption indicates the maximum instantaneous power during operation, not the power consumption throughout the entire use of the product," and claimed, "When comparing the power consumption per use of dryers of similar class from both companies, Samsung Electronics' product consumes less power."

An LG Electronics official said, "We only introduced the official drying power consumption (instantaneous maximum power) value indicated on the product," adding, "LG washer-dryers not only have high energy efficiency with optimized inverter heat pump technology but also have differentiated advantages such as the same size as conventional washers, LG Electronics' unique Mini Wash, convenient dust filters, and detergent compartments. There is also a wide range of choices including ultra-premium and standard models and various colors."

The power consumption (W) commonly indicated on products represents the maximum input power that can be instantaneously supplied, i.e., the maximum amount of work the product can perform. It differs from power consumption amount (Wh), which is proportional to the electricity bill. Samsung Electronics Newsroom conveyed an explanation from a globally accredited institution official, stating, "Power consumption means 'safety assurance' when using the product within the indicated value (rated input)," and "Power consumption and power consumption amount are different concepts."

According to the newsroom, the power consumption amount per wash of the Bespoke AI Combo is 432.3 watt-hours (Wh), and the annual power consumption amount is 90.8 kWh. Multiplying the unit rate of 160 won (per 1 kWh) by the annual power consumption of 90.8 kWh results in an annual energy cost of 15,000 won, which Samsung Electronics explains is the lowest level among integrated washer-dryers in the domestic industry.

Samsung Electronics also emphasized that the power consumption amount per drying cycle of the 20 kg capacity dryer is 1989.1 Wh, and the annual power consumption amount is 318.3 kWh, which is the lowest level in the domestic industry. The annual energy cost is also the lowest in the domestic industry at 51,000 won. They explained that since drying power consumption of integrated washer-dryers is not a mandatory disclosure item, they presented the power consumption amount of standalone dryers with similar drying performance.

Samsung Electronics applied a heat exchanger of the same size as a standalone dryer with a 21 kg capacity to achieve drying performance at the same level as standalone dryers and emphasized that the 'hybrid heat pump' technology can reduce drying time by 20?30%, thereby improving energy efficiency.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics plans to sell the WD53DBA900H model, which has the same washing capacity of 25 kg and drying capacity of 15 kg as the Bespoke AI Combo sold domestically, in the United States next month.
