The Korea Forest Service announced on the 29th that it will establish the "National Uljin Forest Ecology Center" in the area affected by the forest fire in Uljin-gun, Gyeongbuk.
The Uljin forest fire site is where the longest and largest forest fire in South Korea occurred in 2022.
The Korea Forest Service plans to transform this area into a forest ecology center equipped with a forest fire restoration ecology hall, an exhibition garden for ecological restoration materials and fire-resistant tree species, with a total budget of 40 billion KRW from this year until 2027.
After establishment, the forest ecology center will be used as an institution for ecological restoration and vegetation succession research. Vegetation succession refers to the changes in plant communities over time in the same location.
Since last year, the Korea Forest Service has been carrying out forest ecological restoration projects in the Uljin forest fire area. The total restoration target area is 933 hectares, and so far, 220 hectares have been restored. The restoration project aims to be completed by 2027.
Kim Yong-gwan, Director of Forest Protection at the Korea Forest Service, said, "We will devote ourselves to the ecological restoration project for the prompt recovery of the Uljin forest fire area and the restoration of the forest's natural state," adding, "The Korea Forest Service will also ensure that the ecological restoration project contributes to revitalizing the local economy and creating jobs."
