Completion of Unauthorized Street Vendor Removal Near Sindebang Station After 40 Years on the 24th... A Step Closer to Creating Gwanak S-Specialized Street
Removal Completed Without Conflict with Street Vendors, No Safety Incidents Due to Thorough Safety Measures
Expected to Be Reborn as a Landmark of Gwanak-gu Through the 'Gwanak S-Specialized Street' Coexisting with Residents
Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Junhee) has taken a step closer to creating the Gwanak S Special Street by demolishing unauthorized street stalls around Sindebang Station.
The area around Sindebang Station in Gwanak-gu has faced continuous issues related to ▲ pedestrian safety ▲ hygiene ▲ environment due to unauthorized street stalls for over 40 years since the subway opened in 1984.
Although the district attempted several times to regulate the area, it was challenging because the stalls were directly linked to the livelihoods of the operators.
On the 19th, an agreement was made with representatives of the street stall operators for the creation of the Gwanak S Special Street, and from the 23rd to the 24th, district office staff and commissioned companies were deployed to complete the demolition of a total of 16 unauthorized street stalls around Sindebang Station.
The area near Sindebang Station usually has a large floating population, and many residents enjoy walking and cycling along Byeolbitnaerimcheon, located below the station. Also, due to the location near Byeolbitnaerimcheon, a bike rental station (Ddareungi) is installed, and many bicycles are parked on the sidewalks around the station, raising safety and property rights concerns, which made the demolition process difficult.
However, the district thoroughly implemented safety measures and completed the demolition without a single safety accident. After several prior consultations and discussions with the street stall operators, the demolition was completed without conflict.
Most residents watching the demolition welcomed the brightened and cleanly maintained streets and looked forward to the newly created Gwanak S Special Street.
The district plans to complete the creation of the Gwanak S Special Street by May.
The unauthorized street stalls located at exits 1 and 2 of Sindebang Station will be converted to a permit system and will be reborn cleanly in accordance with street vendor guidelines.
Additionally, the district plans to comprehensively renovate the area around Sindebang Station, including ▲ water and sewage works ▲ electrical works ▲ sidewalk construction, to provide a safe walking environment for residents. A resting area jointly used by residents and street vendors will also be established.
The district hopes that the creation of the ‘Gwanak S Special Street’ will transform the Sindebang Station area into a representative landmark of Gwanak-gu.
Mayor Park Junhee said, “As this has been a long-standing project for over 40 years, we will safely complete the construction of the ‘Gwanak S Special Street’ and seek sustainable coexistence plans with merchants. We will continue to do our best to provide residents with a pleasant and enjoyable living environment.”
