April 2nd: Butterfly Garden Remodel Reopens as an Enjoyable and Educational Space
Features Large Butterfly Mobiles and Butterfly Story Stages for Diverse Attractions
Butterflies Viewable Year-Round with Expanded Interactive Programs
Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that Bulamsan Butterfly Garden will reopen on April 2nd after remodeling.
The district carried out remodeling work on the Butterfly Garden for three months starting in January to improve the aging facilities and supplement the lack of exhibition media after five years since its completion. New exhibition media were added, and the flow of visitors was efficiently rearranged to stimulate their interest.
A notable change is the large butterfly mobile at the entrance of the Butterfly Garden. The large ceiling mobile, beautifully fluttering its wings, is expected to especially capture the attention of children. Additionally, the otherwise monotonous stairway walls were decorated with green trees, multicolored flowers, and various insects to add vibrancy.
On the second floor exhibition hall is the Insect Learning Center. Through remodeling, the exhibition flow was reorganized using storytelling techniques. After observing the butterfly growth process in the second-floor exhibition hall, visitors are guided to the butterfly greenhouse to see live butterflies, increasing visitor engagement.
To offer visitors diverse experiences, an interactive insect-catching video was also installed. This interactive video allows children to form teams and catch insects displayed on the wall. In addition, insect dioramas by artist Ko Dae-geon and a trick art photo zone installed in the Insect Learning Center will provide visitors with a rich visual experience.
The butterfly greenhouse is the core facility of the Butterfly Garden where visitors can see butterflies flying directly. It consists of live flowers and flower pots, maintaining an indoor temperature of 25℃ year-round to allow observation of live butterflies throughout the year. A newly installed butterfly metamorphosis tower, inspired by the metamorphosis tower at Singapore Changi International Airport, was also added. The tower has a 360-degree cylindrical structure where visitors can observe butterflies emerging from pupae from all sides.
The Butterfly Garden operates daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the summer season (March to October) and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the winter season (November to February). It is closed every Monday and on New Year's Day, Lunar New Year, and Chuseok holidays. Group visits require separate reservations through the Seoul Public Service Reservation website.
Meanwhile, from April 20 to April 28, the district will hold the "2024 Bulamsan Azalea Festival: ‘Spring Again’" around Bulamsan Healing Town. The "Bulamsan Azalea Festival" is one of Nowon's five major festivals and will be held every weekend during the azalea blooming season at "Azalea Hill," a representative spot in Nowon-gu where 100,000 azalea bushes bloom, featuring various cultural programs.
Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “Thank you for waiting for the reopening of the remodeled Bulamsan Butterfly Garden,” and added, “I hope the spring days of the residents who love Healing Town, centered on the Butterfly Garden where butterflies signaling spring can be seen all year round, will be as beautiful as the fluttering wings of butterflies.”
