Gangjin-gun, Jeollanam-do is raising the festival atmosphere as beautiful daffodils bloom along a 1km section of the Byeongyeongseong fortress walking trail ahead of the ‘27th Jeolla Byeongyeongseong Festival’ to be held from the 29th to the 31st.

According to the county on the 26th, 50,000 daffodils of 13 varieties imported from the Netherlands last September were planted along the 1km fortress walking trail of Byeongyeongseong, and the rest were planted in Jakcheon Kkachinae Park.

The blooming periods vary by variety, and currently, three types?Arkle, Goblet, and Pimpernel?are mainly in bloom. Many of the flowers are still budding, so the festival site is expected to brighten as time passes.

The connection between the Netherlands, where the daffodils were imported from, and Gangjin dates back to the Joseon Dynasty with Hamel. There is a Hamel Memorial Hall near Byeongyeongseong, and it is known that Hamel and his party stayed in Gangjin for seven years during their 13 years and 20 days of captivity in Joseon.

Daffodils are perennial plants, and when planted in outdoor flower beds, once planted, their beautiful appearance can be enjoyed every year in the same place. However, their roots and leaves are highly toxic and should not be ingested.

The English name of daffodil, Narcissus, originates from Greek and Roman mythology, where Narcissus fell in love with his own reflection in the water, mistaking it for another beautiful person, and stared at the water surface all day until he turned into a flower, boasting an irresistible beauty.
