Jeju Angler Catches 1m Giant Flatfish "Big Enough for 50 People to Eat"

Fishing in the sea near Beomseom, Seogwipo City, with an estimated weight of 15kg

"I felt something heavy from the fishing line, so at first I thought it was a yellowtail."

A photo of a large flatfish about 1 meter long caught in Jeju was posted. According to Yonhap News and others, the person in the spotlight is Jang Young-jun (66, Jeju City).

On the morning of the 12th, around 10 a.m., he caught a flatfish measuring 98 cm to 1 meter while fishing near Beomseom Island in Seogwipo City. Jang said, "I was worried the fishing line might break," and after feeling the bite, he fought a tough battle for about 20 minutes before pulling up the flatfish.

He said, "I had a hunch it was a big catch, but I never imagined such a large flatfish would come up," adding, "In all the years I've been fishing, this is the first time I've caught such a big flatfish." The flatfish Jang caught belongs to the family Pleuronectidae and is also called Neopchi. Neopchi is the standard term, and Gwang-eo was originally a dialect, but since the name Gwang-eo has become widely used, it is now accepted as a standard term as well.

The average body length of a common flatfish is about 40 to 60 cm, and its weight is 1 to 3 kg. It is very rare for them to grow up to 1 meter in length. Farmed flatfish in Jeju are raised from fry for about 10 to 12 months until they reach about 1 kg in size, at which point they are shipped. A 1 kg flatfish is generally considered enough for three servings, so a 15 kg flatfish could easily feed 40 to 50 people.

Jang said, "After catching the flatfish, I ate it with my companions on the same day," and estimated, "The weight is probably around 15 kg." Unfortunately, Jang did not weigh the flatfish, so there is no exact weight record.

Earlier, a YouTube channel posted a video showing a flatfish caught on the morning of the 9th in Jumunjin, Gangneung City, Gangwon Province, measuring 1.18 meters in length and weighing 20 kg. It was confirmed that this flatfish was 1.18 m long and weighed 20 kg. This flatfish was about the same length as the average height of a first-grade elementary school student in Korea, which is 1.2 meters.
