Kim Won-i Challenges Re-election, Veteran Lee Yoon-seok Emerges in Jeonnam Battleground
The candidate lineup for the Jeonnam Mokpo City electoral district, known as the political hometown of the late former President Kim Dae-jung and also called the "root of the Democratic Party of Korea," has been finalized, drawing attention to Mokpo, often referred to as the "No. 1 political district in Jeonnam."

Kim Won-i, the Democratic Party of Korea candidate, is aiming for re-election. In the last 21st general election, Kim defeated the formidable "political veteran" Park Ji-won, who ran as a candidate from the Minsheng Party, and secured a seat in the National Assembly. Over the past four years, he has been recognized for diligent legislative activities, including the establishment of a medical school, but he also faces Achilles' heels such as issues related to a former aide and controversies over leaked party membership applications during the last local elections.
From the People Power Party, Yoon Seon-ung, chairman of the Mokpo City Party Members' Council, has registered as a candidate and is cultivating his voter base, while from the Progressive Party, Choi Guk-jin, co-chairman of the Mokpo City Committee, is running.
Park Myung-gi, the Green Justice Party candidate, is a politician who graduated from the Department of Finance and Insurance at Mokpo National University’s College of Business Administration. He currently serves as the chairman of the Green Justice Party’s Jeonnam Provincial Party and co-representative of the Mokpo Regional Housing Policy Coalition.
Choi Guk-jin, the Progressive Party candidate, graduated from the Department of Horticultural Breeding at Mokpo National University’s College of Natural Sciences. He currently serves as co-chairman of the Progressive Party Mokpo City Committee and previously held the position of head of the Organizational Dispute Office at the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions.
The late entry of Choi Dae-jip, chairman of the Pine Tree Party, is also a point of interest. Declaring his candidacy for Mokpo on the 16th, Choi, who hails from Mokpo, graduated from Mokpo High School and Seoul National University College of Medicine, and served as the 40th president of the Korean Medical Association.
Incumbent lawmaker Lee Yoon-seok, who was expelled from the Democratic Party, has declared his candidacy as an independent. He holds a Ph.D. in political science from Kyungnam University Graduate School and previously served as president of Digital Seoul Culture and Arts University. He was elected as a member of the National Assembly for the 18th and 19th terms representing Muan and Sinan, and this time he has shifted his electoral district to Mokpo.
The 22nd National Assembly election, scheduled for April 10, will begin its campaign period on the 28th of this month, with early voting on April 5-6, and voting on April 10 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., followed immediately by vote counting.
