1 Billion Won Worth of Coupons Sold Out in Four Days
App Users Increased by 20% on First Day of Event
C-commerce (Chinese e-commerce) company AliExpress is experiencing a surge in popularity with its special discount event celebrating its 14th anniversary. Since the event began, the number of customers using the AliExpress app has also increased.
According to AliExpress on the 21st, some special discounted products sold out immediately after sales began during the ongoing '100 Billion Festa' event, which started on the 18th. The 100 Billion Festa is a discount event commemorating Ali's 14th anniversary, offering benefits worth approximately 100 billion KRW to domestic customers.
Ali explained that the 'Special Time Sale' is receiving particularly strong responses. The Time Sale is an event where certain products are sold at special prices on the Ali app and website every day at exactly 10 AM and 10 PM. On the first day of the event, the 18th, fresh foods such as eggs, bananas, mangoes, strawberries, and Korean beef were sold for 1,000 KRW each, and all items sold out within 10 seconds. As word of the Time Sale spread online, the sell-out speed has reportedly become even faster than 10 seconds.
Due to more users than expected, discount coupons also ran out. Ali held the '1 Billion PangPang Promotion' event during the festival period, offering a total of up to 1 billion KRW worth of credits, but all credits were exhausted by the 21st. The event was originally scheduled to run for ten days until the 27th, the end of the 100 Billion Festa, but was ended early after just four days.
During the 100 Billion Festa, electronic devices and food products have been popular. According to Ali, gaming monitors, robot vacuum cleaners, wireless Bluetooth earphones, and other electronics showed high sales rates during the three days from the 18th to the 20th. Instant rice and mangoes also made the list of popular products.
All products sold during the 100 Billion Festa, including popular items, are K-Venue products shipped from Korea. K-Venue is a domestic product sales channel launched by AliExpress in October last year, where vendors receiving orders on Ali directly ship products to Korean consumers. It operates similarly to an open market in the existing e-commerce industry, with free shipping. Most delivery times are within three days.
Ali appears to have succeeded in increasing its user base through this discount event. According to mobile index, a big data analysis solution by IGAWorks, the daily active users (DAU) of the Ali app on the first day of the 100 Billion Festa, the 18th, reached approximately 1.65 million. This is a 15% increase compared to the DAU of 1.43 million on the previous day, the 17th. Compared to the average DAU of 1.33 million from March 1 to 18, it is 23% higher.
The news of special discounts also helped secure many new customers. Last month, the Ali app was newly installed about 1.1 million times, nearly double the approximately 600,000 installs in the previous month. The increase in new customers is attributed to the awareness of discount benefits provided to new members, in addition to Ali's special discount events such as the anniversary sale. Ali's monthly active users (MAU) last month also surpassed 6 million for the first time, recording 6.21 million. This is about an 11% increase compared to the previous month's user count.
