Park Woo-ryang, Shinan County Governor, Proposes Birth Rate Policy at Population Decline Area Policy Meeting

Emphasizing the Seriousness of the Low Birthrate Issue and the Need for Region-Led Policy Initiatives

Park Woo-ryang, the mayor of Sinan County, proposed policies to address the low birth rate issue at the "Government-Local Government Meeting on Population Decline Areas" (hereinafter referred to as the meeting) held at the Government Sejong Convention Center on the 18th.

According to Sinan County on the 21st, the meeting was a gathering of 89 population decline areas and government ministries, including the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, to have an in-depth discussion on population decline and regional extinction issues.

Mayor Park Woo-ryang pointed out the seriousness of the low birth rate problem at the meeting and emphasized the need for regions to lead policy initiatives by leveraging their local characteristics.

He particularly proposed a plan to provide financial support to regions with successful outcomes, giving a specific example of the government providing financial aid to local governments with a birth rate above the national average (0.72 in 2023).

Prior to this, Sinan County had proposed policies such as the "Establishment of Local Taxes on New and Renewable Energy" and "Relaxation of Preliminary Feasibility Study Conditions for Population Decline Areas."

Mayor Park Woo-ryang stated, "We will continue to discover various policies and special measures to solve the issues of population decline areas and make efforts to propose them to the government for reflection."
