On the 20th, Kim Tae-heum, Governor of Chungnam Province, expressed his welcome for the government's allocation to increase the quota of medical school admissions.
According to the government's announcement, the medical school quota in the Chungnam region will increase by 137, from 133 to 270. Dankook University is expected to increase from 40 to 120, and Soonchunhyang University from 93 to 150.
The province expects that this increase in medical school quotas will help resolve the blind spots in regional medical care.
Governor Kim said, "To overcome the tragic reality of regional medical care where people lose their lives while wandering in emergency rooms, securing a stable number of doctors was more necessary than anything else," adding, "The government's allocation of medical school quotas is expected to greatly contribute to enhancing the public's health rights as well as resolving the blind spots in local medical care."
He continued, "Going forward, the focus should be on rebuilding local medical care so that medical personnel can settle in the provinces," and requested, "We ask the government to actively support the establishment of national medical schools to improve the local medical environment and secure the insufficient medical resources."
