Memories of 'Dongdaemun-gu Nopo Restaurants'... Selected Including Anheung Galbi and Hoegi Jokbal

Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) will select and support long-established restaurants in accordance with an ordinance established to promote the local food culture and revitalize the local economy.

Dongdaemun-gu is a geographical and historical transportation hub with a large floating population. The commercial district has developed naturally with several traditional markets such as Gyeongdong Market and Yakryeong Market, resulting in many long-established restaurants. Recently, famous YouTubers have introduced various eateries throughout Dongdaemun-gu, including Gyeongdong Market, attracting an increasing number of young people seeking to experience nostalgic atmospheres and enjoy delicious food at affordable prices.

To actively discover and promote excellent long-established restaurants filled with memories and contribute to revitalizing the local economy, the district enacted the "Ordinance on Certification and Support for Long-Established Restaurants in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul" last year, the first of its kind in Seoul.

The district received recommendations for long-established restaurants within the area and selected five restaurants that have been operated by the same owner or passed down through generations for over 30 years without changing their business type, after hygiene inspections and other evaluations. Certified restaurants were provided with certification plaques.

The selected long-established restaurants are ▲two locations in Jeonnong-dong (Sinrakwon, Jeonnong Kalguksu) ▲two locations in Jangan-dong (Anheung Galbi, Haengun Donkatsu) ▲one location in Hoegi-dong (Hoegi Jokbal), totaling five places, which can be viewed in more detail on the Dongdaemun-gu website.

The district plans to continue discovering hidden long-established restaurants through ongoing promotion, discuss specific support measures, and develop them as tourism resources.

Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “With the retro sentiment trending, the number of visitors to Dongdaemun-gu’s long-established restaurants is continuously increasing. We will continue to actively find long-established restaurants worth widely promoting and strive to use them to showcase the taste and charm of Dongdaemun-gu.”
