A man in his 60s has been arrested by the police on charges of receiving money in exchange for providing convenience to a hotel business operator.
The Anti-Corruption Economic Crime Investigation Unit of the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency announced on the 14th that they arrested Mr. A, a man in his 60s, on the 13th for receiving money from a business operator related to the Hapcheon-gun Yeongsang Theme Park accommodation facility development project.
According to the police, Mr. A is accused of receiving tens of millions of won from a business operator between September and December 2021, the second half of the year, in exchange for facilitating procedures related to the hotel development project.
While investigating the so-called “Hapcheon Yeongsang Theme Park accommodation facility development project operator’s embezzlement of 25 billion won project funds,” the police detected circumstances indicating that Mr. A received money and launched an investigation.
Mr. A is currently known to deny the charges, and the police plan to transfer the case to the prosecution once their investigation is complete.
The Hapcheon Yeongsang Theme Park accommodation facility development project involves constructing a hotel with 200 rooms and a total area of 7,336㎡ on a 1,607㎡ site within the theme park.
According to the agreement, the operator invested 4 billion won, and the remaining 55 billion won was borrowed through real estate project financing (PF). However, the actual representative of the operator absconded with 25 billion won of the project funds, and allegations of breach of trust and embezzlement by related parties surfaced, causing the project to halt.
Following a complaint from Hapcheon-gun, the police investigating the case previously arrested the actual representative Mr. A, the nominal representative, the vice president, and other related parties, and have booked three current and former public officials.
