First Domestic Company to Launch AI Analytics Platform for All Employees
LG Chem announced on the 13th that it discovered more than 20 improvement tasks, including identifying quality improvement points for battery separator products within two days through its artificial intelligence (AI) analysis solution platform.
Previously, LG Chem conducted a three-month pilot operation of the AI analysis solution CDS (Citizen Data Scientist) platform with about 40 employees who were not proficient in coding, achieving these results. The improvement tasks also included deriving optimal conditions for the production process of RO membranes (reverse osmosis membranes). RO membranes are devices that filter out salt, and the production of products tailored to customer preferences increased more than fourfold compared to before.
Since his inauguration, Vice Chairman Shin Hak-cheol has continuously emphasized driving innovation across all business areas through AI-based digital transformation technologies and discovering customer WOW points. Vice Chairman Shin said, "AI is one of the greatest revolutions in human history and the most outstanding technology to enhance work efficiency in the current era," adding, "We will lead the industry as a global science company creating differentiated value."
Through AI technology, LG Chem also succeeded in increasing the appropriate moisture content (the degree to which a product holds water) to make it easier for customers to process the final product by predicting the physical properties of superabsorbent polymers (SAP). SAP is a special material consisting of white granules used in hygiene products such as diapers, capable of absorbing moisture 300 to 400 times its own size. It swells into a gel form as it absorbs moisture. The granules within the product must hold an appropriate level of moisture to absorb more water.
In addition, LG Chem is utilizing digital twins to predict equipment abnormalities in advance, such as in regenerative thermal oxidizers (RTO). A digital twin is a technology that replicates machines or equipment in a virtual world within a computer under conditions identical to the real environment.
LG Chem is also actively promoting digital transformation in its work methods. Recently, it introduced an AI contract review solution that automatically reviews and revises contracts. The AI reviews contracts based on standard forms, phrases, and important internal principles, and even suggests alternative phrases, reducing the average time spent on a single contract by up to 30% compared to before.
