Seongbuk-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) is conducting a safety inspection for the thawing season by jointly inspecting disaster-vulnerable facilities in the area with district executives and experts, including Mayor Lee Seung-ro, until the 22nd of this month.

In particular, Seongbuk-gu has many terrain features with mountains and slopes, where there are retaining walls and rockfall hazards scattered throughout. On the 11th, Mayor Lee Seung-ro of Seongbuk-gu conducted a safety patrol by inspecting sites with retaining walls and rockfall risks. Notably, on this day, Mayor Lee wore shoes gifted by Park Yong-ho, the chief of Seongbuk Fire Station, and carefully examined the rockfall risk areas by climbing them himself. The district plans to check for disaster safety risk factors in the area, incorporate expert opinions into the district’s safety management plan, and ensure the safety of residents.

Mayor Lee Seung-ro of Seongbuk-gu stated, “The thawing season is a critical time for thorough safety management as it can prevent accidents that may occur at any time,” adding, “Through this thawing season safety inspection, we will identify vulnerable safety areas in advance and resolve issues to create a safer residential environment where residents can feel secure.”

The district has designated the period from February 26 to March 22 as the thawing season safety inspection period and formed a joint inspection team to conduct inspections. The inspection targets include about 300 locations such as disaster-vulnerable facilities, steep slopes, construction sites, and other hazardous facilities that may have risks of rockfall or collapse due to ground deformation or cracks during the thawing season. The Seongbuk-gu joint inspection team focuses on ▲ ground subsidence, cracks, and uneven settlement of buildings ▲ safety conditions of retaining walls, stone walls, fences including subsidence, cracks, bulging, and blocked drainage ▲ cracks around earth retaining structures and the installation status of struts and formwork supports ▲ safety and maintenance status of facilities.

Minor issues found during inspections will be corrected immediately on-site, while serious defects or urgent reinforcement needs will receive emergency measures followed by repair and reinforcement work for prompt follow-up maintenance.

Especially, facilities with high risk will undergo detailed inspections with experts in related fields to systematically manage risk factors.

A district official stated that during the inspection period, patrol activities in vulnerable areas will be strengthened in cooperation with local community centers, and promotional activities for early detection of risk factors will be intensified to ensure the safety of residents.
