CEO Woo Jeong-hoon and Mayor Joo Nak-young Agreement
Gyeongju City has attracted a 35.1 billion KRW commuting investment in the automotive electric components sector at the Myeonggye 3 General Industrial Complex in Naenam-myeon.
On the 12th, Gyeongju City signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at City Hall with Sigma, attended by Mayor Ju Nak-yeong of Gyeongju and Sigma CEO Woo Jeong-hoon, to establish a factory producing vehicle lighting and interior electronic components.
Woo Jeong-hoon, CEO of Sigma (right), is holding up the agreement after signing a memorandum of understanding for investment with Joo Nak-young, Mayor of Gyeongju.
Through this agreement, Sigma will build a factory on a 19,000㎡ site by 2028 to produce electric and electronic components for internal combustion engine and electric vehicles, including vehicle lighting modules, interior lighting, and ambient lighting.
Additionally, more than 85 new jobs will be created.
Gyeongju City will actively support administrative matters such as factory establishment permits according to the investment plan.
Founded in 2006, Sigma is a manufacturer of automotive interior lighting and interior parts, currently producing and supplying door lights and interior mood lighting parts for 29 vehicle models, including 13 models from Hyundai Motor Company, 11 from Kia Motors, 2 from KG Mobility, and 3 from Renault.
It operates headquarters and factories in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province, and manufacturing plants in Asan and Gyeongju, and has established a solid foundation as a global company with overseas factories in India (Chennai and others) and China (Tianjin).
In particular, Sigma has developed eco-friendly new materials for vehicle interior flooring that are harmless to the human body and secured patents for a versatile gripper, a key core component of collaborative robots.
Sigma is also credited with being the first in Korea to develop door lights that project the car logo onto the ground when the driver opens the car door.
Gyeongju City plans to build a future automotive indoor utility specialized center through a Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy public project, leveraging this investment as a stepping stone.
Furthermore, the city intends to expand Gyeongju into a future-oriented automotive parts hub by attracting companies with outstanding technological competitiveness and supporting businesses producing vehicle interior smart utility products such as ergonomics-based smart seats.
CEO Woo Jeong-hoon of Sigma stated, “Gyeongju has an agglomeration of automotive parts companies and related partner companies nearby, making it the optimal location for automotive parts manufacturers to invest. We will prioritize hiring local residents for the new factory and establish ourselves as a company that grows together with the local community.”
Mayor Ju Nak-yeong said, “We thank CEO Woo Jeong-hoon and all Sigma employees for deciding to invest. We will provide full administrative support to ensure the company settles well in the region and will continue to assist companies in succeeding through various corporate support projects.”
