Yoo Kyung-jun and Han Jung-min "Pushing for Dongtan City Independence" VS Lee Jun-seok "Budget Will Decrease"

In the Dongtan New Town electoral district of Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, the People Power Party candidates and Lee Jun-seok, leader of the Reform New Party, showed differing opinions regarding the independence of Dongtan City. The People Power Party candidates argued that Dongtan and the eastern region should be combined and established as 'Dongtan City,' while Lee opposed the separation for the sake of Dongtan's development.

Yu Kyung-jun, the People Power Party candidate running in the Hwaseong City government electoral district, announced on the 12th that his number one pledge is to "propose a special law for the independence of Dongtan City."

Yu stated, "When Hwaseong was promoted to a city in 2001, its population was about 190,000, but by the end of last year, it surpassed 1 million. However, since administrative districts have not yet been established, the Hwaseong City Hall in the western region, the eastern branch office in Byeongjeom, and the Dongtan branch office in Dongtan are responsible for administrative services, which limits administrative capacity."

He continued, "Dongtan carries the stigma of being a city where 'transportation is hell, education is discriminated against, and medical services are insufficient' because it fails to provide administrative services befitting a population of 1 million. After public deliberation, I will propose the 'Gyeonggi-do Dongtan City Establishment Act' to promote Dongtan, including Banwoldong, to Dongtan City."

Han Jeong-min, the candidate for Hwaseong City Eul, also stated on Facebook that "Han Jeong-min and Yu Kyung-jun will jointly promote the independence of Dongtan City," adding, "Administrative innovation is necessary to allow Dongtan to solve its chronic administrative, transportation, and educational problems on its own."

The independence of Dongtan City was also supported by Hong Hyung-seon, the candidate for Hwaseong City Gap from the same party. During his campaign announcement last year, he pointed out that the underdevelopment of the southwestern region was due to "biased administration centered on the eastern and Dongtan areas" and pledged to separate the southwestern and eastern/Dongtan regions into different cities.

However, Lee Jun-seok, leader of the Reform New Party, expressed opposition to the claims of the People Power Party candidates.

Lee wrote on his Facebook, "The People Power Party candidates in Hwaseong started the discussion about separating Dongtan City from Hwaseong City," adding, "It is difficult for Dongtan New Town, which is residence-based without corporate local income tax in the western Hwaseong area, to develop. There might even be no budget left to fill potholes."

He further pointed out, "Moreover, the People Power Party candidate running in Hwaseong Byeong said that he has never discussed the promotion of Dongtan City separation and cannot agree with it."

In fact, Choi Young-geun, the People Power Party candidate running in Hwaseong Byeong, opposed the independence of Dongtan City. Choi said, "Hwaseong, which is soon entering a special city status, should move toward balanced development overall, and I cannot agree with favoring a specific region."

In response, Lee said, "At least within the party, the Hwaseong City candidates should organize and announce their positions before making pledges," adding, "Rather than establishing Dongtan City, it is a priority to improve administrative convenience and efficiency by establishing a Dongtan District Office."
