Busan Port Authority, On-site Campaign to Reduce Fine Dust at Busan Port

Seasonal Management System Promotion and Inspection of Speed Limit Compliance in Ports, Full-Scale Response to Spring Fine Dust

Busan Port Authority (President Kang Jun-seok, BPA) held an on-site campaign to reduce fine dust at Busan New Port area on the 11th, in collaboration with Busan Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office, Nakdong River Basin Environmental Office, and Busan City, to fully respond to fine dust in spring.

The four organizations, including BPA, signed a business agreement in June 2020 to improve fine dust concentration in the Busan port area and have been operating a cooperative system.

During the campaign held at the New Port North Container Truck Rest Area, the four organizations promoted the seasonal fine dust management system to truck drivers and conducted free emission inspections for cargo vehicles. BPA and Busan Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office also carried out a focused speed limit enforcement campaign within the port.

In particular, BPA distributed safety vests free of charge to truck drivers required when entering the port. These safety vests were made from fabric recycled from PET generated at Busan Port by BPA.

Aligned with the Ministry of Environment’s 5th seasonal fine dust management system (December 2023 to March 2024), BPA has increased incentives for slow vessel operation by 10% compared to normal times to enhance participation and is also enforcing speed limits within the port to reduce high-concentration fine dust.

Additionally, since 2019, BPA has been striving to improve air quality at Busan Port by attaching fine dust adsorption filters to four road cleaning vehicles (two water sprinklers and two dust suction vehicles) operated year-round.

Lee Sang-kwon, Head of Construction Division at BPA, emphasized, “Compliance with speed limits within the port is essential not only for accident prevention but also for improving air quality in the port,” and added, “We will continue our efforts for a full response to spring fine dust until March 31, when the 5th seasonal management system ends.”
