Driver dragged away by security personnel
Possible anti-government protest targeting the 'Yanghoe' period
An incident occurred where a vehicle rushed toward the entrance of Zhongnanhai (中南海) in Beijing, the office and residence of Chinese President Xi Jinping. A video capturing the scene also recorded voices shouting "Murderer Communist Party." The incident, which took place during the Lianghui (兩會; the National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference), China's largest political event, has raised the possibility of being a "political protest."
On the 11th, Taiwanese media including Sanli News reported that a black sedan attempted to enter through Xinhua Gate on the south side of Zhongnanhai but got stuck on the threshold and stopped. A short video of about 30 seconds capturing the incident was posted on X (formerly Twitter) and is reportedly spreading across various internet platforms.
The released video shows a black sedan stopped in front of Xinhua Gate, with about ten security personnel dressed in black pulling the driver, presumed to be male, out of the vehicle and roughly escorting him away. Notably, the video recorded someone shouting "Murderer Communist Party" at the scene.
Zhongnanhai, adjacent to Tiananmen and the Great Hall of the People, is the political center of China, where most of the current and former Chinese leadership, including President Xi, reside, and is known to be heavily guarded. This makes the incident extremely unusual.
Chinese dissident Li Ying posted the video on her X account, stating, "The video was posted online in the early hours of the 10th, but it is currently unclear when the video was recorded or what caused the incident." Li Ying is a Chinese artist-turned-dissident who gained fame by posting videos and photos from the blank protests opposing China's zero-COVID policy in 2022. Although a Chinese citizen, she is known to have fled abroad.
Taiwanese media reported that the incident occurred in the early hours of the 10th. Given that it happened at a sensitive time during the Lianghui (the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the National People's Congress), the largest political event in China, some interpret it as an expression of opposition to the current government.
