One Month Before the General Election... Matchups Finalized in 15 out of 16 Districts in Gyeongnam

On the 9th, about a month before the April 10 general election, the People Power Party and the Democratic Party completed the candidate lineups for 15 out of 16 constituencies in Gyeongnam.

On the 9th, the People Power Party announced the results of the primary elections for Changwon Chang and Gimhae Gap, where candidates had not yet been decided in Gyeongnam.

The People Power Party decided candidates in 15 out of 16 constituencies in Gyeongnam, except for Gimhae Gap, where two of the three non-incumbent primary candidates proceeded to a runoff.

Among the 12 incumbent People Power Party lawmakers in Gyeongnam, 8 are running in their current districts, and 2 are running in different districts.

One candidate was cut off, and one decided not to run.

The Democratic Party completed nominations early for all 16 constituencies, including 3 incumbents, with Sancheong Hamyang Geochang Hapcheon finalized on the 5th.

The Green Justice Party is fielding a candidate only in Changwon Seongsan.

The Reform New Party included two nominations in the Gyeongnam region in the announcement of the 35 constituency nomination review results on the 8th.

The Progressive Party has candidates in 8 constituencies in Gyeongnam.

The Progressive Party, participating in the opposition satellite party for proportional representation, will unify candidates with the Democratic Party in 8 constituencies by the 18th, starting with Yangsan Gap, where the candidate was unified as a Democratic Party nominee.

Some People Power Party nomination applicants, protesting single-candidate nominations and exclusion from primaries, chose to run as independents.

Former Changwon City Council Chairman Bae Jong-cheon (Changwon Seongsan) and former Blue House Press Secretary Choi Sang-hwa (Sacheon Namhae Hadong) declared independent candidacies after leaving the People Power Party.

Former Gyeongnam Deputy Governor for Economy Kim Byung-kyu (Jinju Eul) has left open the possibility of running as an independent after leaving the People Power Party.

On the 8th, the People Power Party reversed the nomination of Park Il-ho, former mayor of Miryang, for the Miryang Uiryeong Haman Changnyeong constituency, appointing Park Sang-woong, an advisory member of the 20th Presidential Transition Committee and Park Il-ho’s primary opponent, instead.

The People Power Party explained that Park Il-ho’s nomination was canceled because he was reported to the prosecution for involvement in inappropriate incidents during his tenure as mayor, failing to meet the party’s emphasized moral standards.

Former Mayor Park Il-ho stated that if the cancellation of his nomination is not withdrawn, he will make a serious decision such as running as an independent.

Some candidates in certain constituencies are having a "return match" (rematch).

In Jinju Eul (People Power Party Kang Min-guk vs. Democratic Party Han Kyung-ho), Geoje (People Power Party Seo Il-jun vs. Democratic Party Byun Gwang-yong), and Yangsan Gap (People Power Party Yoon Young-seok vs. Democratic Party Lee Jae-young), candidates will compete again for the gold badge after four years.

In Changwon Seongsan, where the People Power Party, Democratic Party, and Green Justice Party all field candidates, the People Power Party and Justice Party candidates will face off for the third time.

People Power Party candidate Kang Ki-yoon and Green Justice Party candidate Yeo Young-guk are having their third contest following the April 2019 by-election and the 2020 21st general election, with Democratic Party candidate Heo Seong-moo joining the race.
