German Man in His 60s Vaccinated Over 200 Times in 29 Months
Researchers Say "No Evidence of Side Effects but Do Not Recommend Excessive Vaccination"
A case of a man in his 60s from Germany who received more than 200 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine has been reported in the academic community. Although it is not yet clear why this man repeatedly received the COVID vaccine, the research team stated that he appears to have experienced no side effects so far.
On the 5th (local time), the British BBC reported that researchers from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany published a study on a 62-year-old man who received a total of 217 COVID-19 vaccine doses over 29 months in the medical journal The Lancet the previous day.
This German man received more than 200 COVID-19 vaccine doses from June 2021 to November last year. However, the research team reported that he appeared to have experienced no significant side effects. It is known that he personally purchased and administered the vaccines. The researchers did not disclose how or why he was able to receive hundreds of COVID-19 vaccine doses.
The research team learned about the man’s case through a newspaper article. When they contacted him and suggested undergoing various tests at the university, the man showed interest and provided blood and saliva samples. Dr. Kilian Schober of the Microbiology Institute at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg said, "This case presents a rare opportunity to investigate how excessive vaccination affects the human immune system."
The researchers examined the blood and saliva samples provided by the man, along with frozen blood samples stored over recent years. They also conducted additional blood tests when he received further vaccinations during the study.
The research team stated, "Using the samples provided by the man, we were able to precisely observe how the immune system responded to the vaccinations. Excessive vaccination can stimulate the immune system and potentially fatigue certain cells, but we found no evidence of this in this man." They also added, "This man has never been infected with COVID-19."
However, the researchers emphasized, "We do not support excessive vaccination to boost acquired immunity." They noted that this man is a single individual case and that it is insufficient to draw broad conclusions. In an interview posted on the university website, they stated, "According to current research, the preferred approach remains three doses combined with regular additional vaccinations for vulnerable groups," and "There is no evidence that more vaccines are needed."
Separately from the study, it was reported that this man was also caught in the investigation net of the German police. Despite having already been vaccinated early in the COVID pandemic, he was found to have lied by claiming he had not been vaccinated and then received additional doses, leading to plans to prosecute him on fraud charges. Regarding this, the BBC reported that "no prosecution has been carried out." Some have also claimed that the man received so many COVID-19 vaccine doses with the intention of selling ‘vaccination completion cards’ to people reluctant to get vaccinated in order to make money.
