A man in his 20s, harboring resentment after a breakup notice, threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend's pet dog by putting it in a garbage bag, prompting the police to launch an investigation.

On the 5th, the Gimpo Police Station announced that on the afternoon of the 2nd, they received a 112 report about an abandoned pet dog on a road in Gurae-dong, Gimpo City. The reporter, Mr. A, claimed that after telling his partner, Mr. B, that he wanted to break up, he was threatened by Mr. B with killing the pet dog.

Mr. B sent a photo to Mr. A showing Mr. A’s pet dog inside a designated waste bag that was at Mr. B’s house. He also sent messages such as "It's dying because of you," and "Thanks for making me lose all the affection I had." Mr. A contacted Mr. B multiple times to ask about the pet dog's condition and where it was abandoned but did not receive proper answers.

Upon reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV), the police confirmed that Mr. B discarded the designated waste bag on the roadside in Gurae-dong, Gimpo City, around 8 p.m. that day, then returned about 10 minutes later, picked up the bag, and disappeared. The police plan to further analyze the CCTV footage and investigate the exact circumstances by questioning Mr. B.

A police official stated, "We are investigating a reported case of threats between partners," adding, "We will examine whether there was a violation of the Animal Protection Act or dating violence."

Under current law, killing animals in a cruel manner is prohibited. Violators may face imprisonment for up to three years or a fine of up to 30 million won. Even if the animal does not die, causing injury can result in imprisonment for up to two years or a fine of up to 20 million won. Additionally, distributing videos or photos of animal abuse on the internet is punishable under the law.
