People Power Party Gwangju Branch Confirms General Election Pledge to Enshrine '5·18 Spirit' in Constitution

Candidates from 8 Gwangju Electoral Districts Visit 5·18 Democratic Cemetery... Pledge Victory

The People Power Party Gwangju Metropolitan City Party has confirmed the inclusion of the ‘5·18 Spirit in the Preamble of the Constitution’ as a pledge for the 22nd National Assembly election to be held on April 10.


On the 5th at 10 a.m., Joo Ki-hwan, the chairman of the Gwangju City Party, along with candidates from eight electoral districts in Gwangju, visited the 5·18 Democratic Cemetery and expressed their position regarding the party’s general election pledge to include the ‘5·18 Spirit in the Preamble of the Constitution.’

Chairman Joo stated, “By including the 5·18 Spirit, which marked a milestone in the development of South Korea’s liberal democracy, in the preamble of the Constitution, we will respect it as a universal value and clearly acknowledge Gwangju’s contribution to the maturation of democracy.” He added, “The People Power Party Gwangju City Party, together with eight candidates, will do its utmost to ensure that the spirit of the 5·18 Democratic Movement is enshrined in the Constitution.”


He also said, “As the number one pledge of the People Power Party Gwangju City Party for the general election, we actively requested the central pledge development team to include the ‘5·18 Spirit in the Preamble of the Constitution,’ and it was finally confirmed on the 4th.” He emphasized, “The May Spirit should not become the exclusive property of any specific faction or party, but should be elevated as a pride of all Gwangju citizens. By including the ‘5·18 Spirit in the Preamble of the Constitution,’ we will establish the historical significance of Gwangju’s liberal democracy.”


He continued, “The People Power Party Gwangju City Party will soon announce general election pledges to lead Gwangju’s development,” adding, “We will engage in policy battles with Democratic Party candidates on visions such as a Gwangju with a future and hope, a Gwangju that attracts visitors, a Gwangju where people want to stay, and a cultural hub city.”


Meanwhile, the People Power Party Gwangju City Party’s general election pledge to include the ‘5·18 Spirit in the Preamble of the Constitution’ has also received support from Han Dong-hoon, the Emergency Response Committee Chairman.


Chairman Han Dong-hoon visited Gwangju on the 4th of last month and emphasized, “If the 5·18 Spirit is included in the preamble of the Constitution, our Constitution will become much richer and clearer, making us proud.”
