"I Want to Offer an Alternative to Citizens Who Hate Both Parties and Don't Want to Go to the Polls"
Lee Nak-yeon, co-representative of Saeroun Mirae, officially announced his candidacy for Gwangju in the 22nd National Assembly election to be held on April 10. However, he refrained from specifying the exact electoral district.
On the afternoon of the 4th, Lee held a press conference at the Gwangju Metropolitan Council and said, "I, who am lacking, have returned to Gwangju," adding, "I have decided to run in Gwangju for the general election, and I will announce soon after further discussions on which district I will run in."
Lee Nak-yeon, co-representative of the New Future, held a press conference on the afternoon of the 4th at the Gwangju Metropolitan Council, officially announcing his candidacy for the general election in Gwangju.
Lee explained that he will decide the electoral district considering various political circumstances. There are also figures who want to run in Gwangju under Saeroun Mirae without affecting the Democratic Party's primary, so the party plans to make strategic considerations.
Lee emphasized, "It is difficult to win the general election with the current Democratic Party. Numerous opinion polls say so," and added, "For those who dislike both major parties and do not want to go to the polling station, we want to offer an alternative with this kind of party."
He also said, "The biggest consideration is how meaningful a message we can deliver to the people while holding elections concerning the future of Gwangju and Honam," adding, "Currently, politics in South Korea is destroying the rule of law. The opposition party is doing so with parliamentary immunity, and the president with veto power. Our primary goal is politics without parliamentary privileges and rule of law without sanctuaries."
Furthermore, he stated, "The candidate application process is nearing completion, and the nomination confirmation will be possible around the same time as other parties. We will strive to field candidates in all electoral districts of Gwangju and Jeonnam," and added, "Our goal is to secure more than half of the seats in Gwangju."
Lee declared, "We will develop into a 'trustworthy party' responsible for today's and tomorrow's South Korea in crisis," and vowed, "We will revive the true spirit and culture of the Democratic Party that Gwangju citizens loved and uphold and mature the spirit of Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun."
He continued, "We will devote all our sincerity and capabilities so that Saeroun Mirae will soon be recognized by history as a filial son of the democratic forces," adding, "Sim Cheong threw herself into Indangsu River for her father. I have the same heart."
