Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Kim Ikang) is creating a ‘Child Safety Green Forest’ around Gwangrim Elementary School in Dongcheon-dong.
According to Seo-gu on the 4th, the ‘Child Safety Green Forest’ project is aimed at creating safe and dust-free school routes by establishing roadside forests within child protection zones.
Seo-gu established Child Safety Green Forests around Uncheon Elementary School in Chipyeong-dong in 2022 and around Gyesu Elementary School in Chipyeong-dong in 2023.

This year, Seo-gu plans to invest a total of 300 million KRW to create street flower beds connecting the school area and Yujeok Neighborhood Park starting this month, along with rest areas.
In particular, by actively collecting opinions from Gwangrim Elementary School officials and Dongcheon-dong residents, the project aims to reduce fine dust for children and improve the urban landscape.
Yang Dongsik, Director of the Parks and Greenery Division, said, “Through the creation of urban forests, we will take a step closer to a carbon-neutral city, Seo-gu, and create a child-friendly city where children are happy.”
Meanwhile, last December, Seo-gu installed planters, moon benches, rest benches, and landscape lighting around the school route of Gyesu Elementary School in Chipyeong-dong, and planted about 8,000 trees and shrubs including Eunmokseo, and about 13,000 ground cover plants such as daffodils, receiving great responses from residents.
