Award Ceremony Held at June US Open Venue
Woods: "Honored to Share This Award with Many Recipients"
‘Golf Emperor’ Tiger Woods (USA) has been selected as the recipient of the Bob Jones Award.
The United States Golf Association (USGA) announced on the 2nd (local time) that "Woods has been chosen as the Bob Jones Award recipient." This is the first time Woods has received this award. It is given by the USGA to players who demonstrate outstanding sportsmanship. It is recognized as the highest honor among USGA-sponsored awards. The award has been presented since 1955, named after Bobby Jones (USA), who won a total of 13 major championships in the 1920s and 1930s.
Before Woods, recipients of this award included Arnold Palmer (1971), Jack Nicklaus (1975), Mickey Wright (2010), Ben Hogan (1976), and former U.S. President George Bush (2008?all from the USA). Park Se-ri was selected as the recipient in 2020 as the first Korean.
Mike Whan, USGA CEO, explained the reason for selecting Woods this year, saying, "This award recognizes not only performance but also the impact left by a person’s journey who changed the image of golf and contributed to the growth of the sport." Woods expressed his feelings through the USGA, saying, "I am honored to receive an award bearing Jones’ name and to be among many who received this award before me."
Woods is a ‘living legend’ with a total of 82 wins on the PGA Tour, including 15 major championships. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2022 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from then U.S. President Donald Trump in 2019. The award ceremony will be held this June at the US Open tournament venue.
