'Taste the Traditional Market'... Dongdaemun-gu Rising Together with Traditional Markets

A Sundae restaurant located near Cheongnyangni Traditional Market in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) has recently emerged as a sanctuary for sundae lovers, accompanied by a YouTube video titled "Same price as Gwangjang Market, but a different level of quantity."

This Sundae restaurant, where sundae is sold at 4,000 KRW per 1kg, allowing customers to enjoy a generous "Sundae Feast" for a small amount, was visited by Dongdaemun-gu Mayor Lee Pil-hyung on the 29th.

The mayor ordered 200,000 KRW worth of sundae to share with his staff and expressed his gratitude for promoting the taste and charm of Dongdaemun-gu's traditional markets to many people.

The market is home to various long-established eateries, attracting an increasing number of young people who visit traditional markets after hearing word of mouth.

In particular, in October last year, Dongdaemun-gu traditional markets were featured twice on the YouTube channel operated by singer Sung Si-kyung in a segment called "Meokultende." The features included ▲ Tongdak Street (10.17.), where you can experience the original taste and aroma of old-fashioned whole chicken, and ▲ a handmade noodle restaurant located in the basement level 1 of the new building of Gyeongdong Market among old shops (10.23.).

These establishments, already known as popular eateries among those in the know, have become bustling with visitors eager to experience traditional flavors after being introduced on the channel.

Dongdaemun-gu is promoting the "Cheongnyang Market Mall" project, which integrates nine traditional markets around Cheongnyangni Station, including Gyeongdong Market, to develop them into a global TOP5 tourist traditional market, aiming to convey the market's charm to all age groups beyond just the "Hongdae for seniors."

Mayor Lee Pil-hyung of Dongdaemun-gu said, "The 'Cheongnyang Market Mall,' which will be developed into a tourist traditional market that can captivate not only young people but also foreigners with features such as ▲ Rooftop Market Road (a walking path connecting market rooftops), ▲ Rainbow Market (applying different colors to each market), and ▲ a smart (AI) logistics system, will become a landmark symbolizing Dongdaemun-gu." He added, "There is also the 'Starbucks Gyeongdong 1960 Branch (3rd and 4th floors of Gyeongdong Market main building),' renovated from an old theater, and the 'Youth Mall (3rd floor of Gyeongdong Market new building),' where you can find stylish crafts and food from young entrepreneurs, so we ask for your great interest in traditional markets."
