40s Man Habitually Drunk Driving Arrested
Crashes Into Parked Car and Falls Asleep on the Spot
A man in his 40s who habitually drove under the influence in Busan has been arrested.
On the 28th, the Sasang Police Station in Busan announced that they had arrested Mr. A (in his 40s) on charges including drunk driving and seized his vehicle. Mr. A is accused of driving his car while intoxicated on the 26th of last month and hitting a parked vehicle on a residential street in Sasang-gu. It is reported that Mr. A fell asleep at the scene afterward.
At the time, Mr. A’s blood alcohol concentration was over 0.1%. According to current law, a blood alcohol concentration between 0.03% and less than 0.08% results in a suspension of the driver’s license, while 0.08% or higher leads to license cancellation. The police discovered that Mr. A had six prior drunk driving offenses and had previously caused accidents while intoxicated, prompting an investigation. During police questioning, Mr. A reportedly stated, "I have a habit of drinking and driving when I get angry."
The police stated, "To prevent the possibility of reoffending, we not only arrested Mr. A but also obtained and executed a warrant to seize his vehicle," adding, "We will respond strictly to raise awareness about drunk driving." This action follows the joint "Recidivism Eradication Measures for Habitual Drunk Drivers and Malicious Violators" implemented by the National Police Agency and prosecutors since last year.
Meanwhile, those who report drunk driving, traffic accidents, or hit-and-run incidents can receive rewards through the deliberation of the Reward Committee. Additionally, citizens who assist the police in apprehending drivers are recognized as public contributors to drunk driving arrests and receive separate rewards. The reward amounts range from 30,000 to 300,000 KRW, determined based on the report’s content, specificity, and the circumstances of the offender’s capture.
