The Ministry of Justice announced on the 26th that it has appointed Professor Jeong Hong-sik (53) of Chung-Ang University Law School as the inaugural Director General of the International Legal Affairs Bureau.
Jeong, who graduated from Jeonju Jeollago High School and Chung-Ang University’s Department of Political Science and Diplomacy, earned his degree from Indiana University Maurer School of Law in 2001 and obtained a license to practice law in Indiana. After being appointed as a professor at Chung-Ang University Law School in 2006, he served as vice president of the Korean Society of International Trade Law, vice president of the International Arbitration Practice Association, and president of the International Construction and Energy Law Research Association.
Additionally, Jeong has been recognized for his expertise by accumulating diverse experience in major international transactions and resolving international disputes arising from them, including overseas construction, energy, and overseas investment development projects. He has served as a conciliator at the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) under the World Bank in 2021 and as an international arbitrator at the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in 2022.
Earlier, the Ministry of Justice implemented the ‘Partial Amendment to the Organization of the Ministry of Justice and Its Affiliated Agencies’ in August last year, which established the International Legal Affairs Bureau. The bureau consists of three divisions: the International Legal Policy Division, the International Legal Support Division, and the International Investment Dispute Division. It provides accurate legal support to various government ministries and plays a role in preventing and responding to the increasing number of international investment disputes (ISDS).
