Construction of Seongryugul Visitor Center and Maintenance Around Jangyangsu Hongpae Protection Pavilion
Uljin-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, has secured a 2024 budget of 1.25 billion KRW (875 million KRW from the central government, 108.5 million KRW from the provincial government, and 187.5 million KRW from the county) for the restoration of cultural heritage sites rich in tradition and history.
This project includes the construction of a visitor center to promote the value of Seongryu Cave and the maintenance of the area around the Jangyangsu Hongpae protective pavilion, among five cultural heritage restoration projects.
The Seongryu Cave Visitor Center was proposed last year due to the lack of promotional facilities to showcase the historical and cultural materials and the value of natural heritage since the cave was opened to the public in 1963. A budget of 300 million KRW has been secured for 2024 to plan the exhibition hall and conduct detailed design work.
The county aims to start construction in 2025, intending to revitalize Seongryu Cave as a tourist destination.
Additionally, 200 million KRW has been secured for a full survey of the inscriptions found inside Seongryu Cave in 2019, which include records of King Jinheung of the Silla Dynasty’s visit, to conduct a thorough investigation.
Moreover, a remarkable achievement was made by securing 150 million KRW for safety diagnostics and the establishment of countermeasures inside and outside the cave to ensure the safety of Seongryu Cave visitors.
Furthermore, 400 million KRW has been allocated for the restoration of the stone retaining wall, restroom, and parking lot construction to improve convenience and safety for visitors to the Jangyangsu Hongpae protective pavilion, a national treasure. An additional 200 million KRW has been secured for the restoration and treatment of the natural monument, including the Juniper tree in Hujeong-ri and one other site, ensuring thorough preservation and management of natural monuments.
County Governor Son Byung-bok stated, “We will proceed with the projects without any setbacks to ensure that the secured national budget is used effectively. We will manage and protect the natural and cultural heritage, which are the roots of Uljin-gun, to widely promote their value.”
