Dongdaemun-gu, Jung-gu, Seongdong-gu, and Gwangjin-gu Sign Business Agreement with Cheonil Energy
Expected Savings of About 200 Million KRW in Processing Costs for a Total of 2,281 Tons of Generated Wood Waste in 4 Districts

Dongdaemun-gu, Jung-gu, Seongdong-gu, Gwangjin-gu Promote Recycling of Wood Waste Resources

Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul (Mayor Ilpyeong Lee) signed a joint agreement on the 22nd at the Dongdaemun-gu Office with Jung-gu, Seongdong-gu, and Gwangjin-gu, along with the eco-friendly energy innovation company Cheonil Energy (CEO Sangwon Park), to recycle woody waste resources.

Through this agreement, each district can now recycle the woody waste generated within their jurisdictions, known as ‘unused forest biomass,’ into eco-friendly renewable energy in the form of ‘wood chips’ free of charge.

‘Unused forest biomass’ refers to forest byproducts generated from forest management activities that do not meet the standards for raw timber or are difficult to collect, making their use challenging. These mainly include byproducts from thinning forests or pruning during the creation and management of roadside trees.

The total woody waste generated by the four districts amounts to approximately 2,281 tons. By recycling forest resources (urban forests) that were previously discarded as woody waste into eco-friendly energy, each district is expected to save about 200 million KRW in waste disposal costs.

Additionally, by shifting from simple incineration or landfill disposal methods to recycling, a reduction in carbon emissions is also anticipated.

In the case of Dongdaemun-gu, this means a cost saving of about 70 million KRW for processing 700 tons of woody waste, a reduction of approximately 458 tons of greenhouse gas emissions, and the stable supply of resources (biomass) to wood chip manufacturers for power generation.

Ilpyeong Lee, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “This agreement, where four neighboring districts cooperate to recycle woody waste, achieving resource circulation, environmental protection, and budget savings, will greatly benefit Dongdaemun-gu and each district as we move toward becoming a carbon-neutral city.”
