Pyeongtaek City in Gyeonggi Province has announced plans to hold the '2025 13th Gyeonggi Garden Culture Expo' as a carbon-neutral expo in response to the climate crisis.

On the 22nd, Pyeongtaek City stated in a press briefing, "We will do our best to ensure the successful hosting of the expo so that Pyeongtaek can leap forward as a garden city."

The Gyeonggi Garden Culture Expo is promoted by Gyeonggi Province to spread garden culture in daily life and has been held annually since 2010, rotating among cities and counties. For next year's event, after fierce competition among a total of five cities and counties, Pyeongtaek City was selected as the host at the end of last year.

The city plans to hold the expo for three days in October next year at the Pyeongtaek Agricultural Ecological Park, investing 2 billion KRW, including 1 billion KRW supported by Gyeonggi Province and 1 billion KRW from the city budget. To this end, the city intends to ensure a smooth hosting of the expo by pushing forward with detailed design services within this month.

In particular, the city plans to accelerate the spread of garden culture, using the selection as the expo host as an opportunity. Hansang-rok, head of the Green City Project Office of Pyeongtaek City, explained, "Pyeongtaek has an environmental condition where the forest ratio is only 16.9%, and it suffers from a lack of green spaces due to rapid population growth. Creating a garden city is the only solution to overcome this."

In fact, since 2019, Pyeongtaek City has been creating 32 'citizen participation forests' with the involvement of citizens, companies, and organizations. Additionally, various forms of resident participation are being expanded through local companies such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, Green Pyeongtaek Green Trust, Urban Forest Citizen School, and Citizen Gardeners, promoting the establishment of a carbon garden community network.

Mayor Jeong Jang-seon said, "A transformation into a garden city is necessary to improve citizens' health, happiness, and quality of life," adding, "We will do our best to successfully host the 2025 Gyeonggi Garden Culture Expo with citizens, spread garden culture in daily life, and leap forward as a garden city."
