"Contributing to Making the World a Safer Place"
Recommended by Julian Assange, Founder of 'Wikileaks'
Elon Musk, founder and CEO of Tesla, has been nominated for the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize, becoming an international topic of discussion.
On the 20th (local time), the U.S. political media outlet Politico reported that Marius Nielsen, a Norwegian parliamentarian with the right to nominate Nobel candidates, revealed to local media that he nominated Musk for this year's Nobel Peace Prize. Nielsen stated that Musk "advocated for dialogue and freedom of the press in a polarized world and increased the possibility for individuals to express their opinions," adding that "his technology companies have also contributed to making the world more connected and safer" as reasons for his nomination.
Politico also reported that Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks, was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. The person who nominated him was another Norwegian parliamentarian, Sofie Mahagda. Mahagda explained that Assange was nominated because he "contributed to peace by exposing Western war crimes." Australian journalist Assange received and published on the WikiLeaks site reports related to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and confidential State Department diplomatic documents leaked by U.S. Army Private Chelsea Manning in 2010.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee closed nominations for this year's Nobel Peace Prize on the 31st of last month. Candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize can be nominated by heads of state, government ministers, parliamentarians, academics studying peace issues, and past laureates. The list of nominees is officially disclosed only after 50 years from the award, but nominators are allowed to publicly announce their nominations.
In January, U.S. Republican Congresswoman Claudia Tenney made headlines by revealing that she nominated former President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. The nomination was based on his role in brokering the Abraham Accords between Israel and Arab countries during his presidency. Trump was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020 and 2021 but did not win.
Additionally, professors from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam recognized peace efforts between Israel and Palestine by nominating Middle Eastern peace organizations EcoPeace, Woman Wage Peace, and Woman For The Sun for this year's Nobel Peace Prize. Palestinian video journalist Motaz Azaiza, the Russian Conscientious Military Objectors movement (RMCO), and the Ukrainian Pacifist Movement (UPM) were also nominated.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner will be announced in October, and the award ceremony will be held on December 10 in Oslo.
