Vision for Building the Mobile AI Era Revealed
"Technology Advancement... Continuous Introduction of Innovative Features"
"Collaboration with AI Leaders... Expanding Categories"
Notae-moon Noh, President of Samsung Electronics MX Division, presented a vision to expand the mobile artificial intelligence (AI) era worldwide. He stated that while building a powerful mobile AI ecosystem, the focus will be on features that users want and need.
On the 21st, President Noh expressed this ambition in a contribution to the Samsung Electronics Newsroom. This was the first time since the Galaxy S24 Unpacked event last month that he revealed his vision for the present and future of mobile AI. It comes ahead of the world's largest mobile exhibition, Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, held next week in Barcelona, Spain, and about a month after the launch of the Galaxy S24 series.
Recently, Samsung Electronics integrated its proprietary AI assistant, 'Bixby,' with Galaxy AI. Through this, Galaxy AI features such as eight-language translation and interpretation will be available on previous products like the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy Buds. It is expected that users will be able to invoke desired AI functions via Bixby on earlier models through software updates alone.
President Noh said, "Galaxy AI is just the beginning," and predicted, "New ideas and concepts will continue to be introduced as technology advances and becomes more sophisticated, bringing even newer and more innovative features."
He added, "I have witnessed countless amazing technological innovations and ideas at Samsung over decades and have developed products applying them, but there has been no innovation that will lead to a paradigm shift as significant as AI technology." He reflected, "It was a great personal honor as an engineer to be able to participate directly in this process of change through the launch of the Galaxy S24 series."
He also recalled, "We constantly pondered and questioned what users truly want and need, and these questions formed the foundation for developing the Galaxy S24 series, the first AI phone." He said, "Having prepared for the future of mobile AI for a long time, we have deeply considered how AI technology can enhance our lives and guide social change," and anticipated, "The AI technologies created through this reflection will enable barrier-free daily communication and make many tasks easier and more efficient."
President Noh emphasized that the Galaxy S24 series is a symbolic product marking the dawn of the AI phone era. He stated, "The Galaxy S24 will establish the standard for mobile AI and open a new category of AI phones," expressing confidence, "We will apply and optimize Galaxy AI across various product lines and service areas to build a stronger mobile AI ecosystem." He added, "Based on Samsung’s unique strengths such as a broad product portfolio, a tradition of innovation, and an open collaboration philosophy, we will open the mobile AI era and expand it worldwide."
For example, he predicted that integrating AI technology into Galaxy wearable products could create entirely new experiences. Samsung Electronics plans to release the ‘Galaxy Ring,’ a smart ring specialized in healthcare, within this year. President Noh said, "The Galaxy AI experience will be strengthened and expanded across more diverse product categories through collaboration with more AI industry leaders."
Furthermore, he highlighted the need for responsibility in AI development and stated that Samsung will enhance product security and privacy protection so users can feel safe and trust their AI experiences. He explained that by using a hybrid approach combining on-device and cloud-based AI, some functions will allow users to control data so that it can be used only on their own devices.
Finally, he emphasized that the protagonists of the mobile AI era are Galaxy users. He promised, "It is you who meaningfully utilize AI and open up more possibilities," and assured, "Galaxy AI will continue to listen to users’ voices and evolve and develop with you as the main characters."
