Cellist Lee Jeongran and Pianist Kim Taehyung Duo Concert
Miyaskovsky, Borodin, Rachmaninoff Cello Sonatas
Cellist Lee Jeong-ran and pianist Kim Tae-hyung will present a duo concert at Kumho Art Hall Yonsei on the 29th.
This is the first stage of this year's Kumho Cultural Foundation planned performance series 'NET; WORK'. The NET; WORK performances are special curated stages where performers select pieces considering their interrelations and introduce the hidden musical flow between them. Performers plan the concert by considering connections among eras, composers, and works, and present their own interpretations.
Lee Jeong-ran and Kim Tae-hyung will perform Russian cello pieces under the title "A Night of Russian Soul." They will play Nikolai Myaskovsky's Cello Sonata No. 1, Borodin's Cello Sonata, and Rachmaninoff's Cello Sonata.
A representative of the Kumho Cultural Foundation explained that although all three pieces are cello sonatas, they feature a characteristic where the cello and piano harmonize equally, with the piano playing a role beyond mere accompaniment. Therefore, this concert is closer to a cello and piano duo performance rather than a cello recital with piano accompaniment.
The music of the three composers active in the 19th and 20th centuries has different musical languages, but they stand out with deeply lyrical melodies and dramatic developments, clearly expressing Russian colors. Borodin, as a member of the Russian Five, deeply explored Russian national music. Myaskovsky was influenced by Rachmaninoff's music and infused it with the unique melancholy and romanticism of Russia.
Cellist Lee Jeong-ran has received the Special Prize from the Rostropovich Foundation at the Pablo Casals Competition, the Special Prize at the Lutosławski Competition, first prize and the Contemporary Music Special Prize at the Isang Yun International Music Competition, among others. In 2005, she formed Trio Jade with violinist Park Ji-yoon and pianist Lee Hyo-joo, becoming the first Korean team to win prizes at the Schubert International Chamber Music Competition and the Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition in 2015. She has served as associate principal of the Seoul Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and as a lecturer at Seoul National University. Currently, she is active as a member of Trio Jade and Kumho Soloists, and dedicates herself to training the next generation at Seoul Arts High School, Yewon School, Kyung Hee University, and Yonsei University.
Pianist Kim Tae-hyung has achievements including prizes at the Hamamatsu Competition and Long-Thibaud Competition, first prize at the Interlaken Classics Competition, and fifth place at the Queen Elisabeth Competition. In 2013, Kim Tae-hyung formed Trio Gaon with violinist Lee Ji-hye and cellist Samuel Rutzker, winning second place at the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition in 2018. Kim studied under Kang Choong-mo at Korea National University of Arts after attending Yewon School and Seoul Arts High School, and received instruction from Eliso Virsaladze at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich and the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. He also studied with Helmut Deutsch at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich, graduated from the highest-level vocal accompaniment program, and completed chamber music studies under Christoph Poppen and Friedman Berger. Currently, he is a professor at Kyung Hee University, actively nurturing future musicians.
