Gokseong-gun Announces Results of Candidate Site Selection for Household Waste Treatment Facility

20-Day Public Inspection and Opinion Submission Period

Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 14th that it has selected a candidate site for a new household waste treatment facility to respond to the policy banning direct landfill of household waste starting in 2030 and to establish a sustainable waste management system.

The site selection committee, based on a feasibility study covering 19 items across 5 categories, decided on Geumban-ri, Samgi-myeon, Gokseong-gun as the first priority candidate site through a review held on the 7th.

From the 16th, Gokseong-gun plans to announce the site selection results and investigation process for 20 days and make related materials available at the Environmental Department so that residents can directly view and verify the results.

Through this process, Gokseong-gun will actively collect residents' opinions on the Geumban-ri candidate site in Samgi-myeon and then finalize the site after completing the remaining procedures such as the strategic environmental impact assessment.

The main reasons for promoting this project are the expiration of the existing landfill usage period, the termination of the agreement for the use of the metropolitan sanitary landfill, and the necessity for Gokseong-gun to secure its own waste treatment facilities in accordance with the principle of on-site treatment, as direct landfill of household waste will be prohibited from 2030.

These circumstances have made the establishment of a new household waste treatment facility essential.

A Gokseong-gun official stated, "We plan to develop the new household waste treatment facility as an eco-friendly facility in cooperation with residents, aiming to change the negative perception of waste treatment facilities and reduce conflicts among local residents by creating an ecological park, rest areas, and a public bathhouse utilizing waste heat."

Once the final site is confirmed, support for the surrounding impact area of the waste treatment facility will include the installation of resident convenience facilities and the establishment of a resident support fund within up to 20% of the facility construction costs. This support plan will be finalized through consultation with the resident support council to be formed in the future.
