Creating Nightscapes Harmonizing with Existing Historical, Natural, and Cultural Resources
Dongdaemun-gu Leaps Forward as an Elegant and Vibrant 'City of Light'
Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul (Mayor Ilpyeong Lee) took its first step toward becoming a city of light by holding a kickoff report meeting on the ‘Dongdaemun-gu Nightscape Guideline Establishment’ project on the 7th.
The goal of this project is to create a distinguished nightscape unique to Dongdaemun-gu that harmonizes with its existing historical, natural, and cultural resources, thereby crafting a sophisticated and vibrant urban image.
The district plans to select two out of the ten major attractions in Dongdaemun-gu, identified based on factors such as the symbolism of the location, linkage with key district projects, and the ripple effect of the project’s impact, to implement as pilot projects.
Various implementation plans are under review, including transforming the railings and undersides of bridges and the walls of pedestrian paths beneath bridges into exhibition spaces using light and media fa?ades, installing lighting artworks symbolizing the city of flowers to elegantly enhance the streetscape, and creating wave light patterns on the walkway floors.
“I believe an attractive city must be beautiful at night,” said Ilpyeong Lee, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu. He urged, “I hope a phased approach will be established so that the city’s night can deliver warm and pleasant light that gently permeates to the people.”
