"Delicious Snow Crab Journey, Let's Gather at Hupo Port" ... Uljin Snow Crab & Red Crab Festival Held

Uljin-gun, Gyeongbuk, will hold the ‘2024 Uljin Snow Crab and Red Snow Crab Festival’ for four days from the 22nd to the 25th at Hupo Port.

Under the theme ‘Delicious Snow Crab Journey, Let’s Gather at Hupo Port,’ this festival has prepared a variety of programs where visitors can enjoy the rich flavors of Uljin snow crab and red snow crab, various seafood from Hupo Port, and agricultural products from pristine Uljin, along with the romance and joy of the East Sea.

Snow crabs, which were once served on royal banquets, fill up only when the cold wind blows. Their season lasts from November to May of the following year, but the plump snow crabs can be tasted starting from February.

Uljin is the original village producing the largest quantity of snow crabs. Historical records such as the Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam and Daedong Jiji note that snow crabs have been a specialty of Uljin since the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Joseon Dynasty, Yi Sanhae (1539?1609), who served as Prime Minister, was exiled here and named the place ‘Haepo (蟹浦)’ because of the abundance of snow crabs.

In particular, Uljin snow crabs have been recognized for their quality, winning the Korea National Brand Award for seven consecutive years, establishing themselves as premium snow crabs.

This festival plans to enhance experiential events such as ‘Snow Crab Eating Race,’ ‘Eating Snacks with Crab Claws,’ ‘Catching Snow Crabs with Your Own Hands,’ and ‘Snow Crab Auction’ so that tourists and residents can have a special experience with Uljin snow crabs and red snow crabs, contributing to the promotion of these crabs and the revitalization of the local economy.

Additionally, participation programs such as ‘Making KIT with Fishermen,’ ‘Uljin Mania Song Festival,’ and ‘Snow Crab Flash Mob’ will be expanded to create a festival that everyone can enjoy together.

Furthermore, opportunities to uniquely experience the romance of the East Sea will be provided through ‘Free Yacht Boarding Experience’ and ‘Ulleung Sunflower Cruise Tour.’

County Governor Son Byeong-bok said, “As this is a representative festival of Uljin, we are thoroughly preparing in advance to ensure that everyone who visits can enjoy it safely,” and added, “Please come to Uljin and experience the taste and charm of ‘Korea’s Breath, Uljin,’ which boasts the clean and clear air created by the pristine East Sea and Geumgang Pine.”
