Five pieces from Lee Bae's series, who will hold a solo exhibition 'Burning the Moon House' at the Venice Biennale this April, are seeking new owners.
On the 8th, K Auction announced that it will hold its February auction at 4 p.m. on the 21st at its headquarters in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
This auction, featuring 109 lots worth 8 billion KRW, includes works by masters of Dansaekhwa such as Yun Hyong-keun's 100-ho piece 'Burnt Umber & Ultramarine' (estimated 300 million to 650 million KRW), which graces the cover, Park Seo-bo's 80-ho 'Myobeop No. 980412' (410 million to 630 million KRW), Jeong Sang-hwa's white 100-ho work 'Untitled 79-3-20' (220 million to 1 billion KRW), and Ha Chong-hyun's 30-ho 'Jophap 18-05' (170 million to 300 million KRW).
Four works by Lee Ufan, who has gained international status and fame, will also be auctioned, including his 10-ho piece 'With the Wind S8708-28' (160 million to 300 million KRW) and a watercolor on paper 'Untitled' (65 million to 120 million KRW).
Five works by Kim Chang-yeul, the water drop artist, will find new owners, including the large 120-ho piece 'Water Drop SA930-02' from 1993 (180 million to 300 million KRW), the 100-ho sized 'Return SH97038' (80 million to 200 million KRW), and the charmingly imprinted water drop piece from 1979 'Water Drop CSH34' (55 million to 220 million KRW).
Lee Jung-seop's 'The River That Does Not Return' (150 million to 300 million KRW) also draws attention. Painted in 1956, the year the artist passed away, there are five similar motif works remaining, and this auction piece is considered the most complete among them.
Lee Gun-yong's work 'Bodyscape 76-2-2021' (280 million to 400 million KRW), which completes the work through body drawing using the most basic element, the body, is part of the ‘76-2’ series where the artist stands with his back to the canvas without looking and draws lines in all directions, leaving only parts of his body as blank space. This work provides viewers with an opportunity to contemplate the artist’s own question about 'the essence of the act of drawing.'
Although there is steady demand for overseas works, pieces by Caroline Walker, Izumi Kato, Kohei Nawa, Shara Hughes, and Chiharu Shiota, which are rarely seen in domestic auctions, will be exhibited in various forms.
The auction lots can be viewed at the K Auction exhibition hall from the 9th to the 21st. It will operate normally during the Lunar New Year holiday period as well.
