Korean Women’s Top 'International Remarriage' Partner is Vietnamese Men... What’s the Reason?

As international marriages increase, it has been revealed that the most preferred nationality of foreign men for Korean women’s remarriage is Vietnamese men. This is analyzed to be because many women originally from Vietnam marry Korean men, naturalize, divorce, and then remarry Vietnamese men.

According to the analysis of microdata from Statistics Korea, in 2022, the number one nationality of foreign husbands remarried by Korean women was Vietnam (556 people). The second was China (446), third the United States (141), and fourth the Philippines (46). From 1993, when statistics began to be compiled, until 2003, the most common nationality of foreign men marrying Korean women internationally was geographically close Japan.

Even in 2003, Japan ranked first (1,158 people), China second (808), and the United States third (277). Vietnam was only five. In 2004, when relations with China deepened, Chinese men (2,787) far surpassed Japanese men (1,624) to become the top international remarriage partner. At that time, Vietnamese men were only two. Then, in 2005, the number rose to double digits (13), and after about 20 years, in 2022, Vietnam finally took first place for the first time.

Most of the remarried women’s original nationality was Vietnam. Among the 556 Korean women who remarried Vietnamese men in 2022, 482 (86.7%) were naturalized Koreans. Except for two unidentifiable cases among those 482, all 480 (100%) originally held Vietnamese nationality. A Statistics Korea official estimated, "It seems that many women originally from Vietnam marry Korean men, naturalize, divorce, and then remarry Vietnamese men."

Vietnamese women began registering marriages (first marriage or remarriage) with Korean men in Korea starting in 2000 (77 people). The number peaked at 10,128 in 2006 and was 3,319 in 2022. Professor Park Yeon-gwan of the Vietnamese Language Department at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies analyzed, "Women who married Korean men and naturalized but then divorced do not want to return to Vietnam, so many Vietnamese men who came to Korea as laborers try to settle here. The demand between these groups matched well."
