The government has decided to increase the admission quota for medical schools by 2,000 students for the 2025 academic year.
On the 6th, the Ministry of Health and Welfare held the first Health and Medical Policy Deliberation Committee (HMPDC) meeting of 2024 at the Government Seoul Office and announced that the medical school quota, which had been frozen at 3,058 students since 2006, will be increased to 5,058 students for the 2025 academic year admissions.
The medical school quota was reduced by 351 students during the 2000 separation of prescribing and dispensing functions in the medical field, following demands from the medical community, and has been fixed at 3,058 students since 2006.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare previously stated at a public discussion chaired by President Yoon Seok-yeol on the 1st that considering a shortage of approximately 15,000 doctors by 2035, 10 years from now, they will expand the medical school admission quota starting from the 2025 academic year.
