Gwanak-gu Mayor Park Jun-hee Goes Shopping at Traditional Market for Seollal Holiday

Gwanak-gu (District Mayor Park Junhee) has taken proactive steps to revitalize traditional markets and provide residents with enjoyable experiences so they can have a happy Lunar New Year holiday.

The district prepared Lunar New Year events by supporting a total of 114 million KRW to 13 traditional markets and alley-type shopping districts within the area.

Each traditional market and alley shopping district offered a variety of benefits and attractions tailored to their unique characteristics, including ▲up to 20% discount on ritual food items ▲gift certificate giveaways based on purchase amounts ▲cultural performances ▲traditional experiences ▲neighborly sharing events, and more.

In particular, on the 2nd, Mayor Park Junhee visited local traditional markets ahead of the Lunar New Year to encourage merchants and urged them to pay special attention to safety management.

Mayor Park personally purchased ritual food items using Onnuri gift certificates and said, “I hope traditional markets become not only places where you can buy goods at affordable prices but also spaces of shared joy and giving,” sharing New Year’s greetings with residents shopping there.

Each traditional market also prepared sharing events to spread warm kindness among neighbors during the Lunar New Year.

At Gangnam Alley Market, there was a ‘Tteokguk (rice cake soup) ready meal sharing’ event for elderly living alone; Gwanak New Market held a ‘Sharing Pantry’ distributing side dishes to vulnerable groups aged 65 and older; Bongcheon Jeil General Market hosted a ‘Traditional Market Shopping Experience’ for children facing food insecurity; and Bongridan-gil offered a ‘Warmth Sharing Event’ providing a cup of warm tea to visiting customers, among other diverse activities.

Additionally, visitors could enjoy interesting experience events such as ▲performances by local young artists ▲resident talent shows ▲tteok pounding ▲jegichagi (Korean shuttlecock kicking).

Discount benefits and event periods vary by market, so for detailed information, inquiries can be made to each market’s merchant association.

Furthermore, on the 30th of last month, the district issued ‘Gwanak Love Gift Certificates’ worth 4 billion KRW to ease residents’ economic burdens and stimulate local consumption. Residents can prepare holiday meals at traditional markets using these gift certificates purchased at a 5% discount.

Also, to enhance convenience for traditional market visitors during the Lunar New Year, the district established measures to alleviate parking difficulties.

Parking enforcement near traditional markets has been relaxed, and temporary parking and stopping zones have been designated on roads near Gwanak Jungbu Market for flexible operation. Free access is provided to the parking lots at Sinwon Market and Samsung-dong Public Parking Lot No. 1. It is expected that residents who previously avoided visiting due to parking issues will now be able to use traditional markets more conveniently.

Mayor Park Junhee said, “I wish everyone a year full of happiness and laughter with continuous success,” and added, “I hope you have a warm Lunar New Year holiday with your loved ones.”
