Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae Recommends Appointment of Eom Sang-pil and Shin Sook-hee as New Supreme Court Justices

Um Sang-pil (55, Judicial Research and Training Institute class 23), Chief Judge of the Seoul High Court, and Shin Sook-hee (54, class 25), Standing Commissioner of the Sentencing Commission (High Court Judge), have been nominated as successor Supreme Court Justices to former Justices Ahn Cheol-sang and Min Yoo-sook.

On the 2nd, the Supreme Court announced that Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae, in accordance with Article 104, Paragraph 2 of the Constitution, nominated Chief Judge Um and Standing Commissioner Shin as new Supreme Court Justices to President Yoon Seok-yeol. Once President Yoon submits the appointment consent bill to the National Assembly, the Supreme Court’s successor appointment procedures, including confirmation hearings, will proceed.


Chief Judge Um Sang-pil graduated from Jinju Dongmyeong High School and Seoul National University Law School, and began his judicial career in 1997 as a judge at the Seoul District Court. He presided over the appellate trial related to former Dongyang University professor Jung Kyung-shim’s children’s admission fraud and private equity fund charges.


Standing Commissioner Shin Sook-hee graduated from Changmun Girls' High School and Seoul National University Law School, and began her judicial career in 1996 as a judge at the Seoul District Court. After serving at the Seoul High Court and Busan High Court, she has been a Standing Commissioner of the Sentencing Commission since February last year. She also served as the chairperson of the Supreme Court’s Gender Law Research Association.
