Meta Applies Self-Developed AI Chips in Data Centers
OpenAI Declares Semiconductor Independence, Meets with Intel
Meta Plants 'Artemis' in Data Centers
Meta plans to equip its data centers with a self-developed AI chip. Named 'Artemis,' this chip is the second-generation model of the AI chip Meta developed last May. It supports inference needed for AI models to generate answers to user queries. Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's CEO, previously stated that to develop Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), they would secure a total of 600,000 H100-class AI chips within the year, including 50,000 NVIDIA AI chips 'H100.' They plan to deploy both NVIDIA chips and their own chips in data centers. The goal is to reduce dependence on NVIDIA and cut AI-related infrastructure costs using Artemis.
This Time Intel... Altman Seeks Semiconductor Partner
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is now turning to the American semiconductor company Intel. He will attend Intel's event on the 21st as a special speaker. This is the first time Altman has spoken at a major semiconductor company event. Attention is focused on the meeting between OpenAI and Intel because Altman declared that OpenAI will design its own semiconductors. It is a matter of great interest which partner this AI industry giant will entrust with manufacturing. In fact, OpenAI recently met consecutively with Taiwan's TSMC, Samsung Electronics, and SK Hynix. Following Amazon's launch of the AI chip 'Trainium2,' Microsoft (MS) is also planning to release its own chip 'Mia 100.' The AI semiconductor competition among big tech companies is heating up.
MS-OpenAI Alliance for Humanoid Robots
MS and OpenAI, who have formed a strong alliance, are now discussing joint investments in humanoid robots. The startup receiving calls from both companies is 'Figure AI,' a humanoid robot startup. Founded by developers from Tesla and Boston Dynamics, the company is developing AI-based robots that walk and move on two legs like humans. The goal is to perform dangerous tasks that humans cannot do and to address labor shortages. MS and OpenAI are considering investing $95 million (about 130 billion KRW) and $5 million (about 660 million KRW), respectively.
Tim Cook: Apple AI to Launch by Year-End
Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that AI will be unveiled by the end of this year. At the Q4 earnings announcement last year, Cook said, "We are making huge investments in AI," and added, "We will share details of ongoing work in technology, including AI, by the end of this year." Industry insiders expect that the next-generation iPhone operating system, iOS18, to be released in the second half of this year, will incorporate generative AI extensively.
BTS Disappears from TikTok... Conflict over AI-Generated Music
Universal Music, which accounts for one-third of the global music market, has turned its back on the video-sharing platform TikTok. This is why music from famous artists like Taylor Swift, BTS, and Blackpink disappeared from TikTok starting at midnight on the 1st. Universal Music collects royalties when songs are used on online platforms like TikTok. Dissatisfaction with the flood of AI-generated music on TikTok has led to this conflict. TikTok pointed out that it not only allows AI-generated music without paying Universal Music but also supports development tools, effectively enabling AI to replace human artists. According to Universal Music, TikTok accounts for only 1% of its revenue.
