'Bang' While Removing Nail Polish Next to Candle... Due to This Ingredient

Third-Degree Burns on Body Due to Accident
Precautions When Handling Flammable Materials Needed

A teenage girl in the United States suffered third-degree burns while trying to remove nail polish from her nails. The cause was acetone, the main ingredient in nail polish remover.

Recent reports by the US daily newspaper New York Post highlighted the unfortunate accident involving Kennedy, a teenage girl living in Ohio. The accident occurred on the 5th of last month (local time). Kennedy brought the nail polish remover into her room to remove the polish from her nails. At the time of the accident, there was a candle burning next to Kennedy's hand holding the remover.

At that moment, the remover bottle exploded in Kennedy's hand. The fire then spread to the bed, clothing, and other nearby fabrics, and also caught on Kennedy's arm, hand, and hair. As a result, Kennedy suffered third-degree burns on multiple parts of her body and was hospitalized at a pediatric burn treatment hospital for care.

The cause of the remover's explosion that Kennedy was holding was acetone. The media explained that the acetone mixed with the candle's smoke caused the explosion. In fact, most nail polish removers carry warning labels indicating high flammability.

Fortunately, Kennedy's burn treatment is showing progress. A pediatric hospital doctor treating Kennedy told the media, "We performed surgery to thoroughly clean the wounds and remove dead skin, as well as excision and grafting surgeries. We will do everything possible to ensure all scars recover functionally to the greatest extent."

The doctor also emphasized, "Burn accidents caused by carelessness frequently occur among teenagers. It is important to maintain a safety distance of about 3 feet (approximately 30 cm) from fire sources such as fireplaces, candles, and heaters."
