Seongnam 'Haneulnuri 1·2 Memorial Park' Open During Lunar New Year Holiday

Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province will open the municipal enshrinement facilities, ‘Haneulnuri 1st and 2nd Memorial Parks’ (Galhyeon-dong, Jungwon-gu), from February 9 to 12 during the Lunar New Year holiday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. as usual.

However, Seongnam City expects a concentrated visit of about 5,000 mourners per day and has decided to prohibit the use of 11 ritual rooms (7 in the 1st Memorial Park and 4 in the 2nd Memorial Park) to prevent safety accidents.

In addition, the crematorium located right next to the memorial parks will reduce its operating frequency on Lunar New Year’s Day, February 10, from the usual 8 times to once (7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.), cremating only 13 bodies.

Furthermore, anticipating about 1,000 visiting vehicles per day, 16 parking management staff will be deployed throughout the parking lots of Haneulnuri 1st and 2nd Memorial Parks, which can accommodate a total of 180 vehicles.

Currently, all 16,900 niches in Haneulnuri 1st Memorial Park are fully occupied, and in the 2nd Memorial Park, which has 25,921 niches, 25,677 (99%) are occupied by the deceased.

A representative from Seongnam City Funeral Culture Office said, "Traffic congestion near the memorial parks is expected during the holiday period, so please use public transportation if possible," and added, "You can also pay respects to the deceased without visiting the memorial parks by using the online ‘e-Haneul Funeral Information System’ (sky.15774129.go.kr) operated by the Ministry of Health and Welfare."
