Gyeonggi Province will assign detailed addresses to 2,700 vulnerable households this year. This is a supplementary measure to eliminate welfare blind spots.

The detailed address assignment project for vulnerable households gained importance following an incident in September last year in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do, where a woman in her 40s died because she could not receive welfare support due to the absence of a detailed address.

Accordingly, Gyeonggi Province has decided to assign accurate building unit, floor, and room numbers to the addresses of welfare support recipients and will carry out the detailed address assignment project for 2,700 locations this year.

A detailed address refers to the information of ‘building unit, floor, and room’ displayed after the building number.

In the case of multi-family houses such as one-room units where building unit, floor, and room numbers are not registered in the building register, detailed addresses cannot be used as legal addresses. This causes inconveniences such as loss or return of mail, and in the event of a fire, it may be difficult to quickly identify the location.

Gyeonggi Province plans to identify welfare recipients who are difficult to locate due to the lack of detailed addresses through interdepartmental cooperation and will prioritize assigning detailed addresses to 2,700 households, including vulnerable residents in shantytowns susceptible to fires, by June.

Detailed addresses can be applied for by the owners or tenants of multi-family houses or can be assigned ex officio by the mayor, county governor, or district head to facilitate the use of road name addresses.

Kang Byung-kyu, head of the Gyeonggi Province Address Information Team, stated, "Since addresses greatly affect the safety of residents, we will actively promote more precise detailed address assignments to prevent welfare blind spots."
